To-do or not to-do.

Jewelry

To-do. To-do. To-do. Almost sounds like a beat, doesn’t it? Day in, day out I’m drumming to my own beat as defined by my ever-expanding to-do list. Yes, post-its used to cut it, but no, now I need to jot things down in a special to-do notebook. The pleasure of crossing things off is hardly a secret; all you have to do is flip through pages and pages of messy, lines almost carved into the page. Such satisfaction, such sense of achievement.

Of course, I have recurrent items in this list. One of these that keeps creeping up on me is a classic: Spend less time online, more time in real life. This one is hardly ever crossed off, but it serves as a kind reminder. Until yesterday, that is.

The night before I diligently added this on my to-do list, and woke up into the set of any basic Christmas movie — my wish had been granted: I had neither a phone line nor internet. Sure I was exasperated, but first things first: I got a pen, and crossed this haunting bullet point off without any restraint.

So a day without internet (yes, it only lasted one day), suddenly gave me a lot of free time. In fact, it was enough free time to do another little something I’ve had on my list for days — change the plain banana look. It’s only appropriate to show you a “before” picture:

Old bananas

More old bananas

So yesterday, stuck without internet, I finally started on the project to revamp my shop with some more cohesive photos. I loved using different backgrounds and textures for my photos, but after some reflection, I decided that the general look was all over the place and there were too many things to focus on at once. So, with this in mind, I wanted to take some fresh photos that tied the bananas jewelry together as a good cluster of fresh items.

What do you think?

Some fresh bananas

Your feedback will be appreciated! Please tell me what you think of the new plain bananas. Personally, I’m liking the fresh look of cohesion. Thank you failing internet!

Of course, Internet was reinstated today and so I was able to slave away all day in front of my monitor to renovate the shop’s look. It was a perfect dose of withdrawal and I got to scratch out two things from my to-do list.

Next up, get the phone working. Tech support claims to be working on it, but who believes them? There wasn’t meant to be a phone / internet cut to begin with, but here we are now. A new look and no phone.

You can’t always win.

One bullet at a time

Musings

I knew that never in my wildest dreams would I have managed to complete this über-ambitious list, yet some force of motivation (that is truly beyond me) steered me forward so that now:

– Clean my apartment before I start moving out Ha! Did this last night, after a 5-hour power nap. Planned? No. Did it work? Yes!!

– Complete a video project. My mom hasn’t had a chance to visit me in my hole-of-an-apartment so I’m going to make a video giving her the entire one-minute tour (and that’s stretching it, to be honest). Will make it into something fun and artsy, no doubt. Filmed a short clip that lasted 7 minutes, in a first-person angle — so there was me pretending my mom had actually come to visit me and I was giving her the tour. We waited for a cab to drive by and everything, and had suitcase in hand etc. I couldn’t stop laughing because I actually got excited about this faux-visit and could see myself acting like a complete fool. Such fun!

– Start packing! It took a mere 3 hours. Whoa!

– Move a few of my basic things over to the new place. A few things? Pff! We moved the whole lot today, and so now, the boxes have spread like some disease across all rooms of the new place, waiting to find where they belong. I managed to unpack a few things now, and I always forget how different things look in different spaces. It’s going to take a while to make it homely, but it’s going to happen.

– Upload the hundred something photos that have been idly waiting on that darn camera chip. I still need to sort through them, but first step done.

– Add some new photos here and on flickr. One of these days…

– Open up my shop – or at least the main page with the banner or something. Coming soon!

– At least set up my beading workspace. I need to get back on the beading treadmill a.s.a.p. The first thing I put up and organized. Still haven’t taken a picture, but even if I did now it would look too tidy and unnatural. I like to work in a creative chaos.

[Here come my regulars:]

– Read on, dammit. Erm…when?

– Gym it up (definitely not happening today, haha!) Where did I pack my gym clothes again?

Tomorrow morning I will deal with everything else. Among other things, I’m turning +1 year. Yes, officially, I’m past that mid-twenty marker and the day is completely unplanned, and I’m ready for whatever surprises it may bring.
But first, I need to get my life out of these boxes and out there where it belongs.

A super day

Musings

Yes, it’s been ages since I updated but things have been pretty hectic here in Crete-land. Today is a frantic day in which I hope to achieve a series of unfeasible goals. My to-do list is as follows:

– Clean my apartment before I start moving out

– Complete a video project. My mom hasn’t had a chance to visit me in my hole-of-an-apartment so I’m going to make a video giving her the entire one-minute tour (and that’s stretching it, to be honest). Will make it into something fun and artsy, no doubt.

– Upload the hundred something photos that have been idly waiting on that darn camera chip.

– Add some new photos here and on flickr.

– Open up my shop – or at least the main page with the banner or something.

– At least set up my beading workspace. I need to get back on the beading treadmill a.s.a.p.

[Here come my regulars:]

– Read on, dammit.

– Gym it up (definitely not happening today, haha!)

I will keep you posted on everything that is not happening. Most of these won’t, but it’s fun pretending I’m a Super Chick. Don’t even get me started on my special abilities.

Writing to reach you

Jewelry, Musings

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Thank you postman. I simply love receiving letters (as well as writing them) and when I do, either of the two following scenarios take place:

a) I savour it until the moment is right, atmosphere ambient, music on etc

b) furiously rip it open and devour all its contents hungrily

I do wish more people actually sat down to write letters, or even postcards. In fact, I’m going to cut you a deal: Provide me with an address and I will mail a postcard to you anywhere you are. Anywhere. Play along with me here. I’ll be waiting.

Yesterday was an unparalleled day in productivity and inspiration and I managed to take some photos of the new jewelry items today. Check out my flickr for the new stuff and leave a comment if you feel like it. It will make my day.

Now, let me get myself a real pen and some scrap paper and get to writing a letter. Reciprocity is part and parcel of keeping those letters flowing.

Deliver me please!

Deliver me please!

Into the moment

Musings

During the entire week, I’ve been telling myself than I need to wake up earlier that 10ish (and 11ish even), but have hardly made a conscious effort to meet that 9 o’clock wake up call. When I say hardly, I mean I haven’t even set any alarms, because I falsely convince myself it will happen naturally (of course the other reason is that my Thai-bought cell phone, only has annoying ringtones that are pretty much the equivalent of waking up to the racket of pots and pans, but with an Asian twist). Today, lo and behold, I woke up at 8.30 a.m. and in my disbelieving excitement that my biological clock had finally set itself right, I tried to transmit this excitement to my sleeping boyfriend, who could hardly understand what I was on about through his sleep-heavy eyelids. Enthusiasm diminished, I turned the other way and went back to sleep.

When we woke up at our regular 11ish time, we surprisingly managed to do everything we have always been saying we’d do on Saturdays but have never done until today. Saturdays are usually unrealistically inflated with all this hope and ambition of things we want to achieve, but secretly know we won’t. Today we were just more determined than usual and as a result I experienced the chaos and disorder of your average Greek farmer’s market for the first time, bought freshly-baked bread from the best bakery in town, got a new piercing and shopped at our local (evil) conglomerate for convenience’s sake. All this, while we trudged through what seemed to be the whole distance of Crete.

I have a thing with piercings, but I  think this will be my last one. Of course that’s what I said about my other “last one” two years ago, and look at me now. It’s hard pretending I mean such absolute statements, when I know the impulsive bug in me just won’t stay put. I like to kid myself like that.

I have been making some more jewelry with the new beads I got in the mail last week, but have yet to take some good photos of them. When I sit down to bead I actually get so into it that time sort of freezes and so does my brain actually, because I completely forget what it is I was doing before I picked up the pliers, the beads and whatever else. I call it Beading Alzheimer’s, and the only cure I know of is more beads, please.
