math monday

I’m getting better with the days. Granted it’s 1 a.m. (sort of) but for my purposes it’s still Monday night. I just managed to steal some minutes at the end of a rather longish day, and now it’s time to do the math.

• 1 new listing on Etsy finally! Oh yeah, this banana has risen from the Etsy dead. I’ve managed to locate my beads, and supplies but the frames I use to take photos with the jewelry are still in the mysterious box no. 7 which is nowhere near me, right now.

Caution: not edible!

• 6 is the number of boxes I have unpacked. You might be wondering what’s taking so long — I keep going on and on about boxes. I should be done already, right? Well not quite. I’ve just moved to my apartment and it will soon undergo major renovation, so I’m not too quick with unpacking things that don’t need to be out of their boxes yet. It’s going to be a long while before I manage to call this place my home, but I love changes, and boy am I excited.
• 5-digit number, which I dare not mention, is the cost of the whole renovation. I was doing the math earlier this evening along with the carpenter. I’m quite optimistically looking beyond the big sum of expenses and envisioning the big change and long-term investment. Wouldn’t you?
• 1.5 job interviews for my sister. The .5 is for the second part of the interview which involves some hands-on creativity tomorrow with a live brief (by the way, my sister’s a graphic designer / illustrator and she designs anything plain bananas you see). I’m hoping you can cross your fingers too.
• 1 new pair of earrings that I have yet to list. The perfect way to end a long day of numbers.

Coming soon, a photo of the kitchen I’ve chosen and my clean desk. Ok, I’ll sneak in one of the sea from my balcony too.

How was your week in numbers?

I’m still trying to figure out what day it is. All day today I thought it was Monday. Somewhere along the line, I checked my cellphone and realized that lo and behold, time can’t keep up with me and it’s already Tuesday. I had a few numbers I wanted to mention, so what the hell?

Play along, will you? Let’s go!

• 4 new prints to be framed. Well, make that 2, because I couldn’t help it. Came to Cyprus to discover 4 prints from the wonderfully talented Sam. Thanks ever so much! They look great on my bedroom wall.

Picture perfect!

• 1 point something weeks in Cyprus. Getting into the rhythm of things has been slow but I’m gradually getting there. Imminent move happening soon, as well as major renovation of my current apartment, but when all that happens, I’ll have some photos for you. It seems like eons from now.
• 5 blog posts this week. This is a phenomenal change back to routine again. I’ve missed the internet and blogging.
• 12 origami butterflies in all sorts of colors!
• 1 lovely dog that was happy to see me again!

Woof! Meet muffin.

• 3 yellow chairs I put together for my little classroom.
• 1 new sticker on my car. Just so you can tell it’s me (thanks to Gabbi!)

Oh yes it is!

Today, I’ll keep the mathematics short. There are only a few numbers that matter right now and that’s:

• 2 hours till we catch the ship to Athens. Let’s get the vacation rolling. Berlin and Paris, just around the corner.

That’s pretty much all the math I can think of right now, apart from:

• 20 kg each is what we’re allowed to take on the trip. We’re sharing a small luggage and wonder if they’ll give us trouble (the airline is pretty strict). We don’t even have scales, so we’ve taken turns in lifting it and coming out with our very own humble estimations.
• 5 is the number of dresses I’m taking.
• 4 items left on my to-do list.
• 28 hours till take-off.
• 12 boxes packed as we prepare to move out of our beloved apartment.

Photo taken mid-week. The photo on the wall is now in a box somewhere too.

My week has definitely had more numbers than these, but forgive me. All I can think of is packing and the trip. So this banana is off for a week of holidays and a couple of reunions with good friends.

Hold tight — I’ll be back before you know it.

Oh and by the way, how was your week in numbers?

If we look past the fact that it’s not really Monday today, we can get right down to the Math of things. Let me break it down in numbers for you:

• 1 sale to Montreal. Thank you Stella for making my day with your wonderful message. I know that my plain yin and yang are going off to a great person!
• 1 guest at home (though that number has now increased to two since Monday. It’s a testosterone-dominated home). Our friend George came from Cyprus with a great card that’s currently on our fridge.

The outlines are of myself and my boyfriend. This was taken on the beach next to my apartment in Cyprus.

• 8 people who have shared their enthusiasm for the cycle journal. Spread the word — this will be a cool project and I need more people to make it work!!
• 22 artists (including myself) taking part on the BIG Greek Summer Giveaway!
• 2 little upcycled umbrellas. One of them was behind the shadow on the wall in a previous entry. This little cute pair is now available at my shop

Plain Mary Poppins

• 7 hours spent in a long photographic walk. We did stop to eat lunch and then some dessert too.

Fooling around with the camera mounted on the tripod. I'm caught mid-air!

• 5 is the number of days we have left until Berlin (though it would have been 8 if this were posted on Monday).
• 2 is the number of ultra-cool charcoal illustrations I bought from Sam, of matouenpeluche. In fact, I’m getting 3, with the great sale she has going on in her shop right now. It’s a good thing too, because picking out favorite items is really hard with all those talented drawings she has on display.

One of the drawings I got!

The numbers came flowing in this week, mostly in the negative. I rummaged through my adolescent physics binder and came across this familiar formula:

disappointment + lack of motivation = major deflation

Any angst-ridden teenager is familiar with this bleak aspect of things, but let me tell you, at 25+1 major deflation sets in quite comfortably. But I’m going ahead of myself. It’s Monday so let’s get down to the Math, shall we?

• 137 is the number of photos I took this week.
• 12 (or thereabouts) is the number of photos that ended up being good (Sam, you’re not the only one!)
• 1 pair of new sandals this week! I simply fell in love. Don’t you just love them?
• There is a catch (or not a good catch, you could say)

• 0.5 pair is OK. The clasp on the one sandal doesn’t work properly and the shop refuses to change the shoes or the faulty clasp. Aaaarrrgghhh!
• 2 new books in the mail, both on nutrition. I am trying to take on a new eating lifestyle based on the food-combining diet. It makes sense and so far my stomach has calmed down. I’m a sensitive one.
• 15 days until Berlin and Paris! Woohoo!

Straight out of Beverly Hills, it seems

• 6 days until our friend George comes to visit from Cyprus. We only found out today, as this was a surprise we were meant to find out through snail mail. That card was never sent, so thank you MSN.
• 3 is the number of eggs I used in an attempt to make Eggs Benedict. Two worked out fine, but from the first one I only had the egg yolk left, which looked like babybel cheese by the time I was done. Great.
• Our brunch yesterday: toast, tomato, avocado and one of the successful poached eggs!

• 387.26 is how many Euros it would cost for me to be with my Mom and sister, who are having a wonderful reunion in Surrey right before graduation. I miss them so much, I actually checked for prices. Way over my non-existent budget.
• 1 present ready and sent to Estella, of Star of the East, for the swap she’s organizing on her blog. I love mail!

A special surprise

• 5 wasps located inside our balcony rail. How? Well part of it had rusted and so they sneaked in and were making a nest. Spotted them today and freaked out! I would have had a photo for this, if I weren’t too scared to go near the place.
• 10 bottle caps saved for a special project I’m working on. Soon to be revealed, hopefully.

I have this exact same door in a watercolor painting I bought 2 years ago. I wonder if it's from Chania originally.

• 1,853 words on the blog this week!

Yes, we have a new theme day – and that’s today! I haven’t done proper Math since high school, so don’t imagine anything complex — my head wouldn’t take it! Instead, think of it as the day where I sum up the week that’s just finished in numbers.

It’s going to be banana-tastic!

Oh and I started a new photo project that I’m inviting you to join me — cool photos of numbers! I will be peppering Math Monday entries with these, but feel free to share your own through Etsy convo or e-mailing here, and I’ll update the blog entry.

This will be fun! So let’s get started!

4 is the number of green bugs that we found in the house. They stink when you touch them and they make a lot of noise. I’m terrified they’ll fall in my mouth while I sleep.

22 are the number of days left for our vacation! Berlin first and then a little Parisian taste.

7 are the number of cupcakes / muffins I baked this week.

0 is how many muffins are left as I’m writing this.

89 is the price of my one way-ticket back to Cyprus. I still need to buy it, but I just don’t have the heart to call this the official end of my Cretan life.

0.5 is how much of my book I’ve read. Yes, unacceptable.

24,000 Mbit/s is our supposed Internet rate. We finally got connected on Wednesday but have still to reach such speed (nor will we).

3 are the number of treasuries I’ve made.

a fruity number

41 are the number of pieces I cut my credit cards.

6 is the number of books I borrowed from a friendly bookworm next door.

2 are my new  listings (plain tribal and plain plastic money).

2,091 words published on this blog this past week. Whew! That’s a lot more than I thought!
